She strongly believes in the intrinsic value of education beyond being a mere commodity, focusing on advancing equity, sustainable economy transitions, and societal well-being. With a background in Modern Languages and Education from the University of Leeds, she has held various roles in academic and educational institutions.

Alison serves as a David Goldman Visiting Professor of Innovation and Enterprise at Newcastle University Business School, emphasizing the importance of skills development in IT and Health Sciences to address regional shortages. She is the Founder of North East Futures UTC, providing engaging educational opportunities for young people. Additionally, she contributes to Northumberland College as a Governor within the Education Partnership North East.

As the Vice President of NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research), the largest independent provider of educational research services in the UK, Alison focuses on promoting educational excellence and evidence-based practices. She also chairs Helix Arts, an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organization, and serves as a Director at the Common Room of the Great North, utilizing heritage to inspire future generations in engineering and innovation.
