    Lance Barton

    Undergraduate Research Program Director at Austin College

    Lance Barton is a distinguished member of the Biology department at Austin College with a career spanning back to 2003, where he specializes in teaching courses related to immunology and cellular biology.

    He is a prominent figure in undergraduate research mentorship, having guided over 60 students through lab work, including supervising 11 students in completing Honors theses. His mentoring has seen graduates go on to various programs and careers across the country.

    His academic offerings range from Communication/Inquiry and Introductory Cell Biology to specialized topics like Immunology, Human Infectious Diseases, and Cancer Biology. Lance also engages students in Research and Design of Experiments and Research Experience in Biology.

    During the January Term, Lance runs a unique course titled The Science & Culture of Wine Appreciation, which occurs biennially.

    His research focuses on the regulation of critical cellular processes such as the cell cycle, apoptosis, and gene expression, with an emphasis on proteasomes in eukaryotic cells influencing cellular immune responses.

    Apart from his teaching and research, Lance Barton participates actively in various service roles within the academic community. He chairs the Undergraduate Research Program Review Committee and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, among others.

    He also serves as a sponsor for several campus organizations like Alpha Phi Omega and Sigma Xi, demonstrating his commitment to fostering a well-rounded educational experience for students through extracurricular involvement.

    Lance's education is vast and includes a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, a B.S. in Biology, and specialized certifications in wine education and preparing future faculty in the Life Sciences.

    In addition to his current role as Biology Department Chair at Austin College, Lance has held various positions including Chair of the Biology Division at the Council on Undergraduate Research and serving as a Professor at the institution.
