Following his internship, Joel dedicated four transformative years to the Wildlife Conservation Society's DRC program, serving as the GIS Coordinator. During this period, he resided at the Okapi Wildlife Reserve field station in Epulu, where he provided vital support for various field projects across the DRC, encompassing everything from GIS training to satellite imagery analysis and wildlife data management and visualization. His hands-on experience in the field contributed significantly to the betterment of wildlife preservation efforts in the region.

One of Joel's key professional achievements is his involvement in multi-site wildlife survey projects. Notably, he played a crucial role in managing, standardizing, and analyzing data for the 18-country Great Elephant Census (GEC), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at producing an accurate population estimate of the African Savannah Elephant. His expertise also extended to the complementary GEC-Forest Initiative, where he further leveraged his skills in data analysis and management, building upon his experiences in the development of the Central Africa Data Model for SMART Ecological Records.
Furthermore, Joel collaborated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to examine and review the legal geographic boundaries of the DRC’s protected area network. This work exemplifies his commitment to ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of conservation efforts in the region.
Joel actively engages with local geo-user communities, such as the Puget Sound QGIS User Group, Puget Sound Conservation GIS, and OpenStreetMap Seattle. He believes in the power of community and knowledge sharing, having hosted over 20 MissingMaps mapathons. He is readily available to facilitate these mapathons for organizations or interested groups looking to gain hands-on experience in mapping and visualizing data.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Joel participates actively in his church and broader community. He serves as a volunteer board member and treasurer for Tusubira-We Have Hope, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization dedicated to partnering with community-based organizations to enhance secondary education and empower women in Uganda.
