Erroll Southers
Professor of the Practice in National & Homeland Security at University of Southern California
Dr. Erroll G. Southers is a distinguished Professor of the Practice in National & Homeland Security at the Sol Price School of Public Policy. He currently holds the titles of Director of the Safe Communities Institute and Director of Homegrown Violent Extremism Studies at the University of Southern California (USC). Additionally, he serves as the Director of International Programs at the DHS National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) at USC.
With an illustrious career, Dr. Southers has excelled in various roles within law enforcement and security. He was President Barack Obama's initial nominee for Transportation Security Administration Assistant Secretary and previously held the position of Deputy Director for Critical Infrastructure at the California Office of Homeland Security under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration.
Prior to his current academic roles, Dr. Southers worked as an adjunct professor at the Price School, and as the Director of Transition & Research Deployment for CREATE. He has extensive experience in law enforcement, having served as Assistant Chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence at the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department, as well as fulfilling roles as an FBI Special Agent, SWAT team member, and Santa Monica Police Officer. Dr. Southers also contributed his expertise at the Rio Hondo Police Academy.
Dr. Southers boasts a strong background in counterterrorism and has shared his knowledge as a subject matter expert and counterterrorism analyst, testifying before the Congressional Committee on Homeland Security. He played a key role in developing the Executive Program in Counterterrorism at USC. His academic journey includes earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University, along with master's and doctoral degrees in public policy from the University of Southern California.
