Chief Research Information Officer, Associate Professor
Albert Lai, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, is the Chief Research Information Officer (CRIO) for Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and a Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine & Geriatrics.12 He also serves as the Deputy Director of the Institute for Informatics and holds a position as Professor of Computer Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.12
Dr. Lai specializes in the development of research informatics infrastructure and is well-recognized in the fields of clinical research informatics and consumer health informatics.2 His recent research has focused on the application of natural language processing, temporal reasoning, and information fusion to generate longitudinal computable phenotypes for clinical trial prescreening.2 He has additional research interests in telemedicine, mobile health, data sharing networks, and usability of provider and patient-facing systems.2
In his role as CRIO, Dr. Lai leads the School of Medicine data warehousing and informatics core services, which provide data brokerage and other resources to accelerate discovery and innovation for researchers across the institution and beyond.1 He was recently appointed as deputy faculty lead for WashU Digital Transformation, a product of WashU's new university-wide strategic plan, and its new Digital Intelligence and Innovation (DI2) Accelerator.1
Dr. Lai received his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University.3 Prior to joining Washington University, he held positions at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Columbia University.3
